Apollo Hosting

Like us, Apollo Hosting likes Miva and they have their marketing campaigns and hosting plans built so Miva can run smoothly on the server. Of course Miva is just a store and a hosting account is just a hosting, so it doesn’t make any difference where it’s hosted. These days every company rely on something so they can promote themselves on the Internet and Apollo rely on the additional features you can get for “free” if you want to build an E-commerce site. For example if you go to http://apollohosting.com/hosting/comparePlans.php you will see tons of features listed there, but unfortunately most of them are rather useless.

This is another marketing trick that the hosting companies use to gather their customers using useless features that nobody uses, but most of the people go for the whole bunch of stuff and not the thing they really need. For example you can see in every hosting company and not only Apollo, listed “Shared SSL Certificate”. These certificates are a thing that no longer works, because 99% of the phishing sites use them so they can say that they have a certificate on their page. The first step in taking out these certificates from work was done by Microsoft with their Internet Explorer 7 that gives a big red error when you try to access
such a page. Couple of months ago Mozilla did the same with their Firefox 3.0, so this feature is already totally useless.

While I checked the Terms and Conditions of Apollo Hosting, one thing caught my eye – redundant servers for the shared and VPS hosting. This thing is not offered by everybody and it is a really good feature, but my question is does that really exists in their data center, because with the price to run one server you get very small profit and can they afford to run a second server for this customers ? I don’t think so.

Yet again Apollo are using different tricks to confuse the mass buyer from the original meaning of the technical terms. For example go to their domain section located here – http://apollohosting.com/domains You can see on the left “transfer domain” and “name servers info”.

The term “TRANSFER” means that you transfer the registrar companies and not the name servers. When you change the name server, so the domain can point to another location (server) this is called pointing, but in this case it says Transfer, so the word FREE TRANSFER can be used.

I had my experience with Apollo and from what I saw, they are not a bad host at all, but you just have to be careful what you are buying, because as usual the sales representatives get bigger commission from selling big products and you have to consider if you really need something bigger or not.
